We Shall Do Greater Things
Weekend Retreat John 14:2
An historical retreat. We move though discussions of our heritage – who am I?; our faith – who brought me here?; and our mission – what do I stand for and what is my legacy? The scriptural drama section of the evening was truly an event. The first time this was offered our drama coach cancelled at the last minute, so after much prayer, I decided to have each group tell me the story of one of the little know biblical figures, thinking that they would come back with a recitation. They took the assignment to new heights. The story of Deborah is a perfect example. The first thing you need to know about this story is that the participants took all of the potted-faked plants out of the lobby and found a sand colored blanket from the housekeeper’s room and brought them into the conference room. I wondered what we were going to do when they added all of the “props” to our bill. Karen Davis, the parish’s matriarch, played Deborah sitting on the blanket under the Palms. Sydney Roundtree came to her with a problem to judge and then Ken Heaberlin walked in with a sword made out of a pool cue and wanted her to go to war with him. Karen was laughing so hard that she couldn’t get up off the floor. Ken started out of the room before he realized that she was not going with him. He came back and helped her off the floor and they went off to war. Laughter is the answer to prayer.
