Laughing at Fear

Two/Three Day Retreat

I John 4:18-19

A reflective retreat. What is your biggest fear? This is where we start and allowing ourselves to be very vulnerable at the very start is what makes this retreat special. The range goes from the death of a loved one, to spiders and rats, to my very favorite story. One person, who happens to be from my parish, has a deep seated fear of pumping gasoline. Now under normal circumstances the group found this incredibly funny and she took it in stride. Everyone offered to leave right that moment and show her how to do it properly – with kind of scared me. Apparently, she had her first experience at a gas station and did not realize that the nozzle had to go completely into the tank opening. She pumped gas all over the station and closed the station down until it could be cleaned up. She had great power! In the course of this retreat we discuss what fear is; the Scriptural difference between “fear” and “fear not” as well as human fear vs. the Fear of God.
